>>e.zra-ing: Hey, can we talk?
>>be-birdie-clark: Sure, why not
>>e.zra-ing: It's December 12th. You always wanted to do something fun on 12-12-12 right
>>be-birdie-clark: Why are you asking me if we can talk?
>>e.zra-ing: I've been thinking... that we should try again
>>be-birdie-clark: why?
>>e.zra-ing: look if you're still mad you don't have to lie to me about it
>>be-birdie-clark: Okay, I won't. I'm still upset.
>>e.zra-ing: That's fine, and you deserve to be.
>>e.zra-ing: and I think we left on bad terms
>>e.zra-ing: I don't think you're stupid. You're one of the smartest girls I know.
>>be-birdie-clark: omg this is the worst apology ever
>>e.zra-ing: Okay, you're right. I'm sorry. Really. And I know you think it's insincere but I mean it
>>be-birdie-clark: lol
>>e.zra-ing: ?
>>be-birdie-clark: you live like a street away? and you're texting me
>>be-birdie-clark: an admittedly pathetic apology too
>>be-birdie-clark: not enough
>>e.zra-ing: Fine, I understand that. Can we at least be civil though
>>be-birdie-clark: Have a good evening

>>be-birdie-clark: Happy New Year
>>e.zra-ing: wow you're texting me first again
>>be-birdie-clark: It's called being polite Ezra
>>be-birdie-clark: Believe it or not I like doing that
>>e.zra-ing: of course you do angel
>>e.zra-ing: ...too soon
>>be-birdie-clark: Yep
>>e.zra-ing: Right. Well i'm stuck here with a million family members I don't know so I'll have to go... deal with them
>>be-birdie-clark: hah! you do that
>>be-birdie-clark: tell your brother I say hi
>>e.zra-ing: he says hi back
>>e.zra-ing: he wants to know when you'll come over again
>>be-birdie-clark: idk? we're not dating anymore so
>>e.zra-ing: Oh
>>e.zra-ing: Yeah
>>be-birdie-clark: You remember right? that was undoubtedly a break-up
>>e.zra-ing: nah i just forgot since you seem kinda cool about texting me an w/e
>>be-birdie-clark: Like I said! being polite
>>e.zra-ing: right
>>be-birdie-clark: Anyway, New Mom Clark needs me so I'm gonna go attend to her now
>>be-birdie-clark: Don't get too drunk tonight

>>e.zra-ing: Grad school results and stuff came in, professor V says you made it into The Imperial College at Camphier?
>>be-birdie-clark: I did??
>>be-birdie-clark: Oh my gosh, that's amazing!
>>be-birdie-clark: I knew about Lumiose Tech but not about them. That's something I can brag about later
>>e.zra-ing: Didn't you get into all these schools early? Pretty amazing, objectively
>>e.zra-ing: it's a shame you're not going to grad school
>>e.zra-ing: explain to me again why? I don't really understand
>>be-birdie-clark: What's there to explain? I didn't want to
>>e.zra-ing: Yeah, but like... what are you going to do instead? I mean you can't do anything worthwhile without it
>>e.zra-ing: crap wait that's not what I meant
>>be-birdie-clark: yes it was!
>>be-birdie-clark: I thought we agreed to disagree about this
>>e.zra-ing: I just don't know why you don't... want to. It doesn't make sense to me! How long can this music school stuff go on?
>>be-birdie-clark: I'm sorry to disappoint you, but I love my job. It's fun!
>>be-birdie-clark: Half my students are more mature than you lol
>>e.zra-ing: shut up
>>be-birdie-clark: You can't tell me what to do
>>be-birdie-clark: anyway, got a kid coming in with a water-damaged viola. this'll be a while
>>be-birdie-clark: goodbye

>>e.zra-ing: did your coffee order change?
>>be-birdie-clark: Not recently, no. Why?
>>e.zra-ing: you left your empty cup in the Ansell dorm commons
>>e.zra-ing: Small dark with no sugar?
>>be-birdie-clark: ...Ezra that's been my coffee order for almost three years now
>>e.zra-ing: oh.

>>e.zra-ing: what the heck was up with you and your mom today? I've never seen you so angry
>>e.zra-ing: You seemed way more stressed that normal
>>be-birdie-clark: i am
>>be-birdie-clark: I'm gonna live with my dad for a few weeks, actually.
>>be-birdie-clark: Mom and I got in this huge fight
>>e.zra-ing: that much I know
>>e.zra-ing: what about?
>>be-birdie-clark: I don't remember! That's the worst part
>>be-birdie-clark: it started out a pretty tame 'where is your life going' talk
>>be-birdie-clark: Somehow I think working with my dad has made mom a bit... idk, jealous?
>>be-birdie-clark: I mean it's obvious she doesn't like him...
>>e.zra-ing: How much of this has to do with your dad?
>>be-birdie-clark: I'd say about a solid 44%
>>e.zra-ing: that's weirdly specific
>>be-birdie-clark: that's the thing though. I know how much of it is because of me
>>be-birdie-clark: Mom isn't happy that I declined IC Camphier. She wouldn't shut up about it today
>>be-birdie-clark: She's asking me if she did something wrong. Do you know how much I hate that line?
>>be-birdie-clark: She knows very well she didn't do anything. This is me. This is my problem! She doesn't need to care
>>e.zra-ing: of course she cares. She's your mom
>>e.zra-ing: She knows what kind of things you could do if you went to grad school
>>be-birdie-clark: You're one to talk Ezra. You don't shut up about it either
>>be-birdie-clark: ...am I making a mistake?
>>be-birdie-clark: don't answer that. i know what you'd say
>>e.zra-ing: you're not making a mistake
>>be-birdie-clark: I can tell you're saying that because I want to hear it.
>>be-birdie-clark: You don't really think this is a good idea. I know you too well
>>e.zra-ing: You could give me some credit for trying to be supportive?
>>be-birdie-clark: your support isn't real.
>>be-birdie-clark: I know this because I know you.
>>be-birdie-clark: I don't have time to talk to you right now, Ezra
>>e.zra-ing: Beryllium, don't be foolish
>>be-birdie-clark: I'm going to the library. Goodbye.

>>e.zra-ing: we need to talk about this
>>be-birdie-clark: not gonna happen
>>e.zra-ing: No, we need to. It's not a choice.
>>e.zra-ing: neither of us wanted that so why did it happen
>>be-birdie-clark: you're making it seem worse than it is, Ezra
>>be-birdie-clark: It was one kiss
>>e.zra-ing: I'm not letting us backslide, you know that right
>>be-birdie-clark: not talking about it
>>e.zra-ing: B you're being childish
>>e.zra-ing: We need to establish boundaries or something.
>>e.zra-ing: I'm not into you anymore.
>>be-birdie-clark: Good, I'm not into you.
>>e.zra-ing: Good
>>be-birdie-clark: are we done talking about this?
>>e.zra-ing: why do you want to leave so urgently anyway?
>>be-birdie-clark: well, um
>>be-birdie-clark: last night I freaked out about this to Hannah and I guess she got me a date for today?
>>be-birdie-clark: basically, I'm waiting for my date.
>>e.zra-ing: wait, you're on a date? Now? Today?
>>e.zra-ing: Isn't this a bit hasty of you?
>>be-birdie-clark: Not... really. It's a blind date. It's not like we're together
>>be-birdie-clark: I mean you said yourself, you don't want us to backslide.

>>be-birdie-clark: It was! you so clearly didn't want to be there.

>>e.zra-ing: I'm having a bad day

An epistolary piece I've had in my sta.sh for quite a while now, and just got to finishing tonight. Before my neurobio exam. Because I am a master of prioritizing

:iconharvest-pokemoon:

(word count: 1775)

Often time the dynamics between ex's lead to really cliched storied from my reading experience, and this might just be because I don't read a lot of books that concern themselves with romances. My fear writing dialogue for ex's is that the conversation would come out dry and passive, which is why I haven't written a ton about Ezra Ingram yet. But writing this made me realize... it works. It works in this case. Anyone whom I have talked to about my plans for him know that he is an incredibly important person in Beryllium's life, even if he made it worse in many regards. The two were in a very unusual but seemingly stable relationship for all of high school and most of college. The reason why they broke up is hard to identify clearly... but the impetus was largely Beryllium's decision to not go to graduate school.

The reason why I focus on this now is because Beryllium and TamarinFrog's Winslow have been together for almost half a year now (wow, time flies when you're crying about fiction characters), and I wanted to introduce and resolve this arc before any more heart events. Whether or not Berry knows this, Ezra has left her remarkably distrusting of the conviction of people who say they care about her. I want both of them to learn to forgive and forget first. Beryllium deserves to be happy, after all I've made her suffer through. But alas, she has to get through this again before she can get there.

tl;dr I'm an ass to my characters

OKAY kind of running and faving here, but this one I had to stop on, because this was so intriguing!
This has an incredibly natural progression. And it was nice seeing an angry side to Berry. It's also pretty tragic to think of how passive she is now.
I hope she can realize how great she is soon!Hopefully her bird nerd can help her see that :3
