"Oh goodness... was I just going on there? S-sorry! I just... y'know. I really like talking about this.”

Name: Beryllium “Berry” Clark Vista

Age: 32 years (24 debut)

Gender: Female

 Pokémon: #630* – Mandibuzz  (shiny)

Height: 5’6

Body Style: Petite and Mature

Birthday: February 27th

Home Island: Affection Atoll

Personality:  (Quiet nature, Often lost in thought) (+) Caring, (+) Imaginative, (+) Hopeful, ( = ) Polite, ( = ) Agreeable, (-) Self-conscious, (-) Easily Distracted, (-) Passive, (-) Unconfident

Beryllium appears on the surface to bright and quirky; an eccentric but grounded artist who sees the world for all the beauty it truly possesses… of course, this is probably the impression you got if you’ve been listening to her music without getting to know her personally. The truth is that Beryllium isn’t nearly as loud and adventurous as one would think, and certainly not as grounded. She lives up to vivid appreciation for life that her songs suggest of her, but she just cannot find herself desiring the company of many people at once. Beryllium Clark is genuinely very happy just spending time alone in her room with her beloved cello.

Despite her obvious introversion, Beryllium isn’t averse to company in small doses and will do her best to make others feel comfortable when they are around her, uncomfortable as she may be herself. It doesn't take long for Beryllium to loosen up in small crowds or one-on-one, and she reveals her true nature to be cheerful, excitable, teasing, optimistic, and sometimes even pretentious. She is always friendly and never less than helpful, and her behavior is easily adapted to complement the demeanor of those around her, even if it means engaging in an animated discussion about darker subjects.

Beryllium has a tendency to be somewhat of a pushover, and has very little in her to actually call someone out if they were using her in any way, even if she realizes she is being taken advantage of. She's more likely to assert herself the fewer people there are around her, but she fails to do so in large crowds; being around many people instantly clams up the relatively more energetic Beryllium, and she retreats to being the polite, grudgingly cooperative person she seems to be. Large parties and crowd exhaust her. She'll only go to big event if a) it's a wedding, b) she's with good company, or c)she gets to play music.

Beryllium is a hopeless romantic, and is charmed by things that are quite simple. Something like a hand written thank you card is more likely to cheer her up on a bad day than a fancy gift. However with her quaint tastes comes a tendency to daydream. Easily distracted by her thoughts and small things around her, Beryllium doesn’t usually tune others in unless they get her attention somehow before they begin speaking to her. She is also easily distracted while running errands. Something usually pops into her head; a song, an idea, a particularly delightful vision of the future, and the task at hand is promptly forgotten until something snaps her back to reality. She's left to leaving post-it notes with reminders on them all over her house, and their pretty pastel colors really brings a sense of whimsy to the place appropriate for someone like Beryllium.

It has been about two years and much has changed, even thought it is also true that very little has changed. Walls that stood in front of Beryllium guarding her off from others have shattered, leaving behind a melancholy openness about her. For once in her life, Beryllium Clark has been forced to be genuine. Feel genuine friendship, genuine happiness, genuine love. And yet, she has begun to exude a sorrow about her manner, and about herself. This does not stop her from feeling the affection she does, but new walls have begun to grow about her, closing her from her own recognition of her genuine discomfort with herself. She's begun to feel real. And now that she has, she's starting to realize everything about her that isn't... And she doesn't have time to think about that! She's a working woman. She can't afford an existential crisis, as inevitable as one may be...

:new: Beryllium has suffered with the consequences of knowing her dark type will always color her identity. She had a long time coming to get to a point where she has realized that she can’t change it. Turning shiny was an act on a whim, a last save at self love that she was hoping she could get to, but it didn’t seem to work right away. It took a lot more- the constant challenging of her own ideas about dark types, and the eventual realization that she is someone who can be loved even at her most grotesque.

Beryllium Clark has finally learned to be happy. And she is not at all intending to let that happiness go.

History:

Beryllium Clark was the youngest girl in a family of sophisticated women in Unova's Mistralton City, all patrons of the humanities. Her mother, a Mandibuzz named Delancy Stasis, was a famous professor of history at the local university, which was praised as being one of the best schools in Unova. Her two older sisters, Neon the Skarmory and Antimony the Pidgeotto, were interested in business and sociology respectively, and very early in life, it was instilled into Beryllium’s brain that she was supposed to be into the humanities as well. Her rich mother, who inherited quite a bit from a lineage of famous professors, often held highfalutin parties at their grandiose house, and when the equally grandiose guests asked what she wanted to be when she grew up, she would simply answer ‘I wanna be a literature professor!’, which was promptly followed by Delancy grinning to herself and ruffling the little Vullaby’s hair. “Doesn’t she have the most charming aspirations?” She would ask her friends, who were very delighted by the precocious intellect and insight the three young ladies possessed. Indeed, the world that Beryllium was born into was one of high culture, affluence, and prestige. She quickly learned that to make it big in the world, one had to be fond of thinking.

Now Beryllium’s father, a Xatu named Marcellus, had been divorced from Delancy for three months when Beryllium was born. They were too different, they agreed; it was nearly impossible for them to raise three girls together. However, Marcellus and Delancy were on relatively good terms, and while Delancy’s greater income granted her custody of the three girls, they would all visit Marcellus at his workshop every few weeks. The Xatu made musical instruments, and hand-crafted each one with the utmost care and precision. While his work was exceptional, business was fairly slow, and he didn’t make a lot of money. Neon and Antimony were quickly put off by the ‘poverty’ that their father lived in, and while they loved him dearly, they cared little for his practice. However young Beryllium found the instruments fascinating, and would stay up late with Marcellus during their vacations and let him teach her how to play. The saddest day of each vacation from school was the day Delancy took the girls home. Beryllium wouldn’t get to play another instrument until they went back.

On Beryllium’s twelfth birthday (and I must affirm that the party was of a very sophisticated nature), Marcellus made a surprise visit with a gift that Beryllium treasured more than any of the others; a handmade cello. In the days that followed, she asked Delancy if she was allowed to walk to her father’s workshop on the weekends and have him teach her how to play. Now as everyone knows, proficiency with an instrument does no harm to your social standing, and the Mandibuzz agreed to her request. So Beryllium would visit her father every Friday after school and learn how to play her instrument. But only a reasonable amount; after all, the ultimate goal was to become a literature professor.

However Delancy didn't account for what was a natural gift and affinity for music. The younger vulture loved her cello so dearly that it confused her mother, and eventually the time came when Delancy reviewed Beryllium’s report card and demanded that the lessons stop. So much time was dedicated to practice that her grades were slipping, and she was just one year from applying to colleges. Beryllium grudgingly consented, and her passion for music was put on the shelf as she made it through the rest of secondary school. Beryllium did manage to recover her grades, and was admitted to her mother's university as a literature major. Beryllium graduated high school the same year she evolved, at the young age of 17.

Since the Stasis family was so closely tied with the school, Beryllium received all the perks of being a professor's daughter. But as she chugged through her higher education, she found that something was… off. She and literature just didn’t click. She attended seminars, held discussions, and met some of the best minds in the field (at least within a 50 mile radius from the school), and she found that nothing gave her the same joy that she got from practicing the cello with her father. But no! This was not the way to think about it. She always wanted to be a literature professor, and she couldn’t if she hindered herself like this. She would be so torn when she received letters from her mother and her sisters; ‘I’m so proud of you, love’ and ‘So who’s your literature professor? Is it that cute Grovyle?’ and ‘You’ll make a fantastic professor in the future, I just know’. But Beryllium wasn’t sure how to respond. She liked her classes, but she just didn’t feel like this was what she wanted to do for the rest of her life.

So when Beryllium was 22, she sent her mother news that she did not plan on going to graduate school.

The news caused uproar in the house. ‘How could you throw away your dreams like that? How do you plan to recover from this if you change your mind?’ Even Marcellus made an appearance to question his youngest daughter’s judgment. But the Mandibuzz’s mind was made up. No more chasing dreams that weren’t working out for her. Instead, she had a new dream; become a music teacher. Her favorite memories were of learning music with her father, and something told her that she was meant to make music for the rest of her life.

Delancy was confused by this sudden change in heart. As far as she knew, Beryllium always wanted to be a professor. But after discussing this new plan with Marcellus on and off for a few months, they decided to grant their youngest daughter’s wish. Beryllium was a smart young lady, and they wouldn’t want her to do something that didn’t make her happy. The Mandibuzz was sent off to live with her father while he set up a part of the store dedicated to music lessons. And what a success they were! Having someone in the workshop to teach brought in an unexpected profit. People who wanted their children to learn music bought instruments from Marcellus and paid for lessons from Beryllium. And the more people who took lessons, the more people who wanted to buy instruments. Marcellus’s shop grew larger and he hired more employees, thrilled by the surprise success it was seeing. But in some time, Beryllium had new aspirations; she wanted to set up a music school of her own. Marcellus gave his daughter his blessing before sending her off with a brand new handmade cello, a reasonable amount of money to set up a shop, and some extra to pay for transportation. Where Beryllium was headed to next, she didn’t know. But she was willing to look for the best place to set up a shop. She was finally ready to do what she loved for a living, and she wanted everything to be perfect when that happened.

<hr)
Beryllium has learned slowly but reliably that moving far away from home was the best thing she had ever done for herself. She allowed herself to do so many things she thought she was no longer capable of - be a best friend, become and inspiration, fall in love. A life thoroughly worth living. A life she has written for herself.

Yet it seems there is some discontent in her new life... As if something about her slow shedding of her past is troubling her. Not a depression so to speak, but more like a melancholy frustration. These feelings have had a severe impact on Beryllium's desire to go outside and socialize. Beryllium usually solves this this problem by drinking more coffee and writing sheets for students until 2am.

The stress of Berry’s identity had gotten so bad that she nearly changed her totem more than once. But in a last-ditch effort to change when she found she didn’t have the heart to change from her mother’s totem, she donated a blessed shiny crystal to the Goddess, and lo and behold, her brown was replaced with iridescent black, the steely grey with a warm sienna. But this wasn’t enough, she found, she still didn’t know what to do.

Her mother wasnt pleased with the change either, feeling threatened by how Beryllium was so willing to change what she was, not quite leaving her alone to face the difficult experience of being a dark type in a hostile environment on her own, but intending to. And so the two grew silent. Calls were sparse, conversation was dry. Beryllium was distraught that her own mother refused to talk to her, but she was obligated to look forward. She had things to do! Jobs to take care of. And something important on her mind.

Finally, Feeling quite ready for something good, Beryllium proposed to her beloved Winslow Vista, and the two were married shortly after. The celebration marked a truly happy moment for the vulture- she never really experienced happiness quite this simple and yet still this profound before. The fight with Delancy dissipated quickly- the older Mandibuzz was in no mood to distract her youngest from her joy with petty squabbles like this. But Berry noticed her mother’s trepidation in addressing the issue.

:new: The healing process was slow, and ongoing, but despite the butting heads, the tough conversations, and the frustration, Berry and her mother slowly started to become okay. Not necessarily with their totems, but with themselves, and their relationship. Despite this progress, motherhood forced Berry to ask herself if she was really the trendsetter she felt she was - she feels an awful lot like her mom, and worries about the implicit messages she might be sending her kids as a result. But at the end of the day, Berry knows this is just worry about her parenting, something normal that is taking on weight because of the complicated history she has with her mother. And even if that relationship colors much of how she behaves, Berry likes to think that she kept the good from her childhood, and has done so without much of an identity crisis. In the end, Berry’s childhood was good.

And she hopes that she can be even better for her children.

Things of Interest

Ability: Big Pecks - defense cannot be lowered. This manifests itself outside of battle in Beryllium's seemingly endless patience - life keeps throwing curveballs at her, and not once had she cracked. She isn't aware she has this ability. She attributes her patience to nothing being quite the final straw.

Moveset

:iconnormaltypeplz: Round (15pp, 60p, 100% acc) || Beryllium attacks with a song, and does damage through the sound waves she emits. No one sees this attack, but it is incredibly targeted and will only affect the foe Beryllium wants to attack. Occasionally her song is so energizing that others sing along, increasing the move's power. Beryllium has the potential to do a great deal of damage with this move, since her musical acumen is nothing short of impressive. However her horrid stage fright prevents her from using this move very often, since she doesn't like others hearing her sing.

:iconflyingtypeplz: Air Slash (15pp, 75p, 95% acc) || Beryllium attacks her opponent with her feathered arms.  She uses this as a primarily defensive move, since she is non-confrontational by nature, and since this move doesn't require her to sing or violently attack someone with antimatter- she literally just has to slap a foe and that can do enough damage to buy enough time for her to run away.

:icondarktypeplz: Dark Pulse (15pp, 80p, 100% acc) || Beryllium lets out small bubbles that absorb a lot of the surrounding light from her body, and throws them at her opponent. Her most powerful move, it is rarely used. It is a last resort in using her moves for defensive reasons. When Beryllium is incredibly frightened by something she perceives as an immediate threat, her discordant thoughts manifest into a Dark Pulse attack that surrounds her body. This version of the attack is much weaker, but has a greater affinity for potential threats.

:bulletgreen: Dulce the Manetric (m) - Jolly nature, impetuous and silly|| a cheerful and zealous dog who behaves in a manner similar to that of babies who just got over their stranger anxiety. Clearly doesn't realize that he isn't a puppy anymore. Loves belly rubs, sniffing things, and 'accidentally' shorting out appliances. Hates rain, food being on high shelves, and bathtime.
:bulletgreen: Stelladonna the Dragonite (f) - Naive nature, somewhat vain || a vain but gentle dragon, eager to make friends who can feed her large ego. Very intelligent and autonomous, and often goes shopping or on errands alone. Loves ukulele music, any and all attention, men, and being told how pretty she is. Hates credit card restrictions and being woken up from her beauty sleep.
:bulletblue: Luminary the Swablu (m || helper) - Quiet nature, quick-tempered || a serious and snappish little dragon who lives for the sole purpose of reducing entropy in the world. Loves cleanliness, sitting on Berry's head, and admiring how pretty Stelladonna is. Hates loud music, dust, unkempt lawns, and Stella's many ex-boyfriends.
:bulletgreen: Wolfgang the Bayleef (m) - Gentle nature, likes to run ||
a sweet and compassionate little dear; always has others' interests in mind, even if it means biting off more than he can chew. Beryllium adopted him during a trek she and Winslow took into the mines - his brother Antonio went home with Winslow. Loves literally everything except Serperior.
:bulletgreen: Sias the Natu (m) - Serious nature, often lost in thought|| Berry's creative partner in the sense that he makes a loud squawking noise in response to all questions, even if they are rhetorical or directed at someone else. Cannot see, and navigates using weak psychic sense - that is, if he chooses to move at all. Loves piano music and being carried. Hates sudden sounds and electrical outlets.
:bulletgreen: Mortimer Jam-Danaher the Glameow (m) - Bold nature, proud of his power || A very mean cat. The result of an unholy union between two cats that tried to eat Beryllium in several isolated occasions. A brilliant and dramatic cat who is probably planning to take over the world. Likes being pampered, his mother, and being pampered by his mother. Hates Beryllium, Beryllium's pets, and everything else in this deranged world.
:bulletgreen: Stradivarius the Eevee* (m) - Brave nature, quick-tempered || A very noble and chivalrous eevee that Beryllium adopted when she and Jem went into the mines. He constantly wants to fight things for sport, and easily tires of the pacifist ways of his human companion. Loves joust, battling, and knowing he is relied upon. Hates lazy days and being left alone.

Talents:

-Beryllium is a multi-instrumentalist, and can play guitar, cello, and piano. However, she is most proficient with the cello and practices playing it more often.

-She is also something of a musical genius - her ability to learn an instrument in an alarmingly short time is worthy of admiration It makes up for the fact that she has no other talents other than music and literature haha

-Despite never following through with her language degree, Beryllium loves words. Loves them to a point of unintentional flamboyance. When she’s especially absorbed in though, she often throws around long, sophisticated-sounding words with a nonchalance that tends to be off-putting.

Theme Song: 'Never Coming Down' - Eleisha Eagle
"The blues and greens are blending, my torn heartstrings are mending, and I am never coming down..."

Fun Facts:

-She does have a pen carved from a bone that she uses to write. She considers her bone pen lucky.

-Beryllium gets along well with most children.

-As a vulture, she loves meat. In fact, she needs it to feel full. But as a distinguished lady she can't let her literally-carnivorous tendencies show up... Ever. She tries to hide it by eating some before she goes out anywhere.

-She won't eat raw meat because of social graces, but she could certainly stomach it if there was nothing else available.

-It's going to be nerdpocalypse if you ever decide to talk about classical or modern literature with her. She reads dead authors almost exclusively, and will speak about said authors with all the pomp and affect that is fitting for a literature major such as herself ie. don't mention literature unless you think pretension is hot

-She introduces herself as Beryllium but actually prefers that strangers call her Berry. When she told other that her name was Beryllium, she got some… weird questions. (Oh, so are you a chemist? Are your parents chemists? What’s your favorite element of the periodic table?? What is your general opinion of Photoelectron Spectroscopy??)

-Her arms are pretty much human, solid bones and everything; they're just feathery. Beryllium can't fly.

:new:-She hand-writes letters to Delancy, Marcellus, and Neon regularly. Mona and her husband Grant moved into Beryllium's neighborhood recently, and frequently bring their young children Ashby and Aidan to play with Berry and Stella (whom Ashby has 'officially' adopted. When a toddler says it's official, it's official).

-Beryllium can't drive, but she does have a motorcycle license! Her bike isn't very impressive, but it's fuel-efficient and compact, so it's good enough for the island.

-Delancy is Serious and highly curious. Marcellus is Modest and highly persistent. Neon is Docile and somewhat vain, and Mona is Sassy and impetuous and silly.

-Beryllium isn’t very coordinated, but since coming to the islands she's developed a fondness for dancing, terrible as she is. She will say she refuses to dance in public, but will comply easily if you give her no choice

:bulletred:Things I've Learned While RPing:

-Beryllium has ABYSMAL luck with animals. She has been attacked three times and almost eaten twice. She is wary around Meowth and Seviper for these reasons.

-Beryllium stutters when she gets shy or nervous. However, if she's not shy or nervous with someone or near a lot of people, she talks pretty candidly and often rambles.

-Beryllium no longer has stagefright, but she does get really weird around cameras

-Not a coffee addict yet, but we'll see in like 10 years :dummy:

-She's very ashamed of the meat-dependence her totem causes her, and is unlikely to tell even good friends about it unless she's forced to explain it. She doesn't eat meat in public unless everyone else is eating it too.

-Beryllium keeps reminder notes all around her office and house so that if she gets distracted by something, she can remember what needs to be done.

-She really seems to like listening to people talk about themselves, or about their hobbies, or about anything really. She loves listening to people talk.

-Similarly, she gets a little embarrassed when she talks about herself, because she doesn't want to seem egocentric.

-Beryllium is incredibly motherly, and does a fairly good job providing care and emotional support for people and pokemon who are ill.

-She gets a tiny bit offended when people call her out on her inability to assert herself

-Beryllium is afraid of using other people's electronic appliances without supervision because she isn't used to modern technology and usually fears she'll break something.
