Description

:iconespial-world:

"This unusual animal is so named for its resemblance to hedgehogs and "Golden Glow" Sedum plants. Their primary defense tactic is to hide their body under the sand in the presence of carnivorous predators. Therefore, is very easy to mistake them for actual Sedum. "

Species name: "Golden Glow" Hedge Hog (Paraechinus sedi)

Species: Mammal (Plant crypsis)

Chosen design elements: 1) I love succulents 2) I love hedgehogs 3) desert challenge 4) obvious logical progression.
But in all seriousness.
I chose this design because incorporating plant elements into animal designs is practically a hobby of mine! I am so inspired by plants, and this Sedum I incorporated into this design was a species I did a lot of rooting research on for my statistics class a few weeks ago. I picked it because it was absolutely beautiful... and because it had enough leaves for me to work with.
Also! "Hedge Hog" is a pun! Get it? Hedge? Like plants? Get it?? Hehehe I'm so clever

Description: Despite their resemblance to Sedum plants, hedge hogs are not related to plants at all. Their fleshy spines are mostly skin, so that minor damage to them don't cause any lasting damage to the hedge hog. Hedge hogs' primary defense adaptation involves hiding their bodies in the desert sand so that their spines look like a plant.

Location and Diet:
Hedge hogs are insectivorous. They can store water in their spines, similar to how actual succulents store water in their leaves.

Behavior  and Mating: Despite their cuddly appearance and delicate frame, Golden Glow hedge hogs are solitary and generally dislike the company of their own. Most intraspecies interaction comes during late winter during the mating season. Females rear the offspring on their own, abandoning them after about two years. Ironically, hedge hogs don't seem to mind the company of other non-predatorial species, and make rather good pets for their quiet and clean nature.
