Arabidopsis by KayVeeDee Arabidopsis by KayVeeDee
This Monday I got totally finished with this crazy lab involving Arabidopsis and stomatal density that I will spare you the details of unless you are actually interested and ask about it.

Basically, my control group went through a statistically significant change.
Considering that most of my friends didn't even get statistically significant and/or usable data, I guess I did pretty well.

Anyway, here's a drawing I've been working on for the past week! It would be bigger, but earlier today my computer blue-screened right in the middle of a save, and the whole .psd file was compLETELY DESTROYED. I tried to recover it for an hour before I gave up.
Thank God I was taking process screenshots the whole way through or I probably would have drowned in my tears.

I know I've been crappy about replying to stuff but I promise after this week I'll have time! Thanks for being patient. ^^

EEE KAY! First of all, congrats for finishing your lab work!
Secondly, this is BEAUTIFUL WHAT THE HECK
Just colours and awesome plants and I notice you experimented with head angles too! Well done!

Yaaaay thank you! >u< That project was actually the worst. If it didn't involve so many pretty plant slides I probably would have given up.
But thank you thank you sooo much!! :icondummylahugplz: I honestly can't tell you how happy I am you like this! I'm super proud of it~
Oh hahaaa yeah that took a ton of references xD I'm so glad you noticed! Thanks! >u<

It sounded horrible, that's for sure, but you pulled through! Yay Kay! :dummy:

You should be proud of it, it's amazing! I love seeing original art from you~! Those colours though... I love them.
Head angles are so annoying, you did it well! And you're welcome!

Yay!! Thanks for the support! I'm very glad that nightmare's over. I am ready for bigger, better things! Like neuro lab.

I'm so glad you're excited about my original art! It doesn't get nearly the same reception for the most part, but I guess that's just the curse of people who jump into the art world through fanart. I can work my way out of this if I just keep making more art! ^^

Oooh, I'm excited for you!

Yeah, I know what you mean. But persist and you shall succeed! And everyone's gonna be like, "WOW have you seen this artist?! And they do fanart too!" as opposed to the other way around or something, haha! You go girl!

This is so beautiful, it's a nice tribute to a plant that holds such scientific value (and it's much nicer than the rH factor being named for the monkeys, I don't think the monkeys even care XD). It's got a great composition. I don't know if you were thinking of the Golden Mean, but you're using it here and it really lets the eye journey through the piece. If that makes sense. Does it make sense? I hope it makes sense.

Anyways, I'm always happy to hear something cool that you did in school, and it's great that your experiment worked out because I'd say 70% of a plant-related experiment is not killing the darn thing.

Ahh thank you so much! I've been drawing this plant all over the place since I started that experiment, haha! Anyone from school who has seen my watercolor diary knows that I've been paying Arabidopsis a lot of attention... most of them think it's undue, and it might just be because we're all frustrated with our lab projects xD
I didn't know that, actually! About this implementing the Golden Mean. I kind of just fiddled with the composition until I liked how it looked. But that's amazing! I should try actively working with that sometime or another :D

Oohoho trust me, I definitely almost killed those plants. Apparently forgetting to water for one day is fine, as long as you're not under a high-intensity growth lamp. At least the TA knew about this. When I told him I didn't want to throw it into biowaste because I spent a lot of time on it, he let me take it home xD So I have a pet Arabidopsis plant now!

I was! I love naming plants. I asked one of my friends who was in lab with me and she told me to name it 'Elvendork' and now I'm conflicted because that would be hilarious but I also think that I should name one of my tiny cacti Elvendork and name this plant something else instead :'D
Do you have any ideas?

Ooh, lemme see. Uhhh..."Cryptopher", like cryptochrome and Christopher? Er, or "Cresstopher" or Barnaby because why not. Or "Angie" from angiosperm or....Bill. ehhh i dunno i named my frog "frogden nash" and that should tell you my taste in names XD

I like Angie! I think that's pretty clever for a plant name, actually. Angiosperms are flowering plants, right? So Arabidopsis would work perfectly for that category! Thank you! :D
what are you talking about that is an amazing name for a frog

So is it now officially Angie? :D  And yep, angiosperms are flowering plants, as opposed to...uh...not flowering plants. durr.

would you believe that my brother came to my house with a bucket and a tank one day, told me he "rescued" the frog from being dissected, and left it in my room? Xl  This was after it got loose in his apartment and his wife freaked out. I'm like an animal depository, apparently (you don't wanna hear about the goldfish incident. or the sparrow. or the kitten)

Indeed! I'll think of a last name later, but Angie it is! It's very appropriate, and it's honestly pretty clever xD Major props for coming up with that! :D

woah woahhh wait really
that is the greatest pet story ever oh my gosh you could actually make a movie out of that story and I would watch the heck out of it
What happened with the goldfish?I'd ask about the sparrow and the kitten but you make them sound like the craziest stories ever and I want to be prepared for that hahaa

Um? Well I think what I did here was I drew the sketch on a separate layer in light brown and let it to 'Linear Burn'! And then I added the base colors underneath It wasn't very neat or anything, since I like to color pick from the linear burn layer on top of the base layer/background and clean up on top of the sketch layer. I'm so reliant on layer modes to determine my color palette, haha! I hardly ever manage to get colors I want without doing something with layer modes.

I actually just use the basic hard round brush most of the time! For the sketch I have it at 75 or 80% opacity, and for the base colors I have it at 100%. Usually for cleanup my opacity's at 80%, but it changes a lot depending on what I'm doing.

I see. Do you have pen pressure on? I've always wondered if opacity settings are needed if that is on. I barely change opacity settings ever because I use pen pressure, so hearing an opinion from someone who uses it would be nice.

I do! I keep 'tablet pressure controls size' on all the time, and manually change opacity when I need to. I mostly only change opacity when I'm blending or cleaning up lines, or switching between the two. If i'm cleaning up details like eyes or the edges of leaves or other objects I usually go back to 100% opacity.
I actually didn't know you didn't change opacity much! It seems kind of difficult with how I like to approach things, which means of course I have to try it sometime xD
